We had never heard of the phrase before, but our curiosity was piqued after viewing a few in the living area of the amazing Toronto renovation of Meredith Heron. So what’s a “hostess stool,” anyway?

These reserve seats provide a spot for the host to perch for an instant before altering the music, refilling beverages or alighting straight back to the kitchen. As Heron describes it, “When amusing, the host seldom sits, but when they do they can pull up among the small stools to get an instant chat.”

Here they become a coffee table when not in use. Hostess or no, it is fine when business calls to get additional seating near at hand
