Ponding can occur on horizontal and low-slope roofs which are installed with tarpaper, roofing tar and fine gravel, or even a comparable built-up system. Low spots in the roofing permit water to pond, which can damage the plywood and roofing sheathing with time. A roof that leaks where water stands in climates have to be assessed by a professional. In most cases, a do-it-yourself contractor with the ability to operate on a roof can avoid the expense of a skilled and repair ponding working with a plastic cementitious leveling compound found in roofing supply outlets.
Access the horizontal or low-slope roof having an extension ladder. Describe the low spots or areas where ponding occurs by water stains on the roof coating, mud or debris that is concentrated.
Put on work gloves and safety glasses. Remove loose gravel and any debris in the region of a very low spot with a stiff broom. Apply medium pressure onto a wire brush and scuff the surface of the roofing pitch in the region of repair to ensure adhesion of the leveling compound. Remove loose debris with the broom.
Open the container of roof-leveling compound. Pour some compound in the centermost portion of the low spot and let it flow outward to the edges of the spot. If necessary, add more compound to fill a very low spot.
Use a wooden trowel to smooth the leveling compound to a uniform surface that’s in accordance with the adjacent field of the roof. Repeat the process to repair other low areas where ponding is happening.
