If your basement is a dank, closed-in dungeon in which you store paint cans and fear changing the HVAC filter, then do not despair. designers have magically changed some of the most depressing basements I’ve ever seen into family-friendly havens, inviting guest suites, inspiring workspaces and fantasy guy caves.
Some of these had plenty of square footage and the advantage of natural lighting to use, while others had been no more than damp holes in the floor underneath your home. Here are just five of the most wonderful basement renovations we’ve featured, together with hyperlinks to find the complete tours.
Wentworth, Inc..
1. Colonial Upstairs, Scandinavian Downstairs
This basement renovation gave a household a multipurpose area where they could all spend time together playing, watching TV and having a home office. It also gave them an opportunity to break away from your Hawaiian decor used across the rest of the home and enjoy another style that they admired: Scandinavian modern.

Designer and builder Bruce Wentworth left the rafters exposed and painted them white to lighten up the distance. He used wood strips to cover a few of the more unsightly elements, such as ductwork and structural posts, and within this area to create a smart media wall.

The renovation also gave the parents a home office from which they may continue to keep an ear or eye to the kids.

2. Contemporary Meets the Dark Side
Architect Ryan Duebber transformed this previously cramped and wet basement into a favorite gathering and entertaining area. The renovations gave the owners a den, laundry room, bath with steam shower and also a bar-kitchenette.

Duebber painted the exposed rafters black; they work well with the couple’s modern tastes.

Industrial touches mesh with the functional components often found in bathrooms and the concrete floors. As an example, Duebber used a metal wall that is weathered and curved to separate the living space by the utility space.

4. Guy’s Getaway
Whena Family Guy writer and producer needed a motivational man cave for relaxing and working, he also called upon interior designer Kyle Schuneman.

5. Slide Down, Climb Up and Tee Off
While this house’s pirate boat in the bedroom has been given top billing in our Tour, the basement probably deserved a separate excursion of its own — starting on the first floor of the home, by which a spiral tube slide offers an adventurous way to descend underground. Builder Steve Kuhl describes the slide since “severe tubular craziness.”

The basement also contains this golf simulator drop. The only problem with this basement is that the homeowners may never need to go out to play.
