If your stain appears blotchy or uneven onto your flooring, it was probably caused by poor application procedure or inadequate timber preparation. If your flooring still haven’t been coated with lacquer or varnish, or have already been removed from any topcoat, then you can even out the stain by sanding and then applying more stain. Stain absorbs into timber at different rates depending on how the surface is ready. To out stain colors, the sanding of the floor has to be consistent.
Get down on your hands and knees. Use an orbital electric sander or a handheld oscillating sander using 100-grit sandpaper to sand over the ground lightly. Sand forwards six inches and back five inches constantly moving parallel with the grain of the timber. Sand over the ground completely; attempt to move consistently as you can.
Dip a sponge into an open can of stain. Moving as fast as you can, completely wet the floor with stain then wipe out the stain off as fast as you can using a soft, dry cloth. Let the stain dry for 30 minutes.
Wipe the floor with a soft cloth dampened with acetone in case your flooring still appears uneven. Focus on blotchy or darker areas. Blend the borders of jagged areas into lighter areas. Wipe harder on darker areas to lighten the stain to fit present lighter areas. Let the stain dry for 30 minutes.
Wipe the floor down again using an acetone dampened cloth if you’re able to still see uneven colors. Repeat if necessary until the color evens out.
